When You Want to Go Deeper

Saints who pressed beyond the surface—and what they found

O living flame of love
that tenderly wounds my soul
in its deepest center!
John of the Cross · Living Flame of Love, Stanza 1
Deep calls to deep
in the roar of your waterfalls.
Psalm 42:7

Teresa of Ávila mapped the journey inward:

I began to think of the soul as if it were a castle
made of a single diamond,
in which there are many rooms,
just as in heaven there are many mansions.
Teresa of Ávila · The Interior Castle, First Mansions
The important thing is not to think much
but to love much;
and so do that which best stirs you to love.
Teresa of Ávila · The Interior Castle, Fourth Mansions

What would it mean to move one room deeper
into the castle of your soul?

As the flame consumes the log
and transforms it into fire,
so God, in this state,
transforms the soul into Himself.
John of the Cross · Living Flame of Love, Commentary
I have been crucified with Christ.
It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.
Galatians 2:20

Thomas Aquinas shows that depth can be pursued through the mind. Truth, understood precisely and humbly, becomes a ladder into God:

Truth is the conformity of intellect and reality.
The light of reason is set in us by God,
so that it belongs to the reverence for God if we use it properly.
Thomas Aquinas · Summa Theologiae, Part I

Thérèse of Lisieux longed to be a warrior, a priest, a martyr—to do great things. Then she discovered that depth is not found by climbing but by loving:

I understood that LOVE COMPRISED ALL VOCATIONS,
THAT LOVE WAS EVERYTHING...

In the heart of the Church, my Mother,
I shall be Love.
Thérèse of Lisieux · Story of a Soul, Manuscript B

Catherine of Siena discovered that depth is not a destination but a consuming fire—one that cannot remain private. Intimacy with God becomes a fire that burns away pretense and compels witness:

Love is the flame that burns away all rust
and makes the soul clear and bright, like polished gold.
Catherine of Siena · The Dialogue of Divine Providence
The soul that loves me will pour itself out
in work and service for others,
according to the grace I have given it.
Catherine of Siena · The Dialogue

The longing for depth is not restlessness.
It is the pull of the One who waits at the center.

A Prayer for Those Who Seek Depth

O living flame of love,
wound my soul in its deepest center.

I want to go deeper—
past the surface, past the noise,
into the castle where You wait.

Teach me that depth is not achieved
but received;
not climbed to but loved into.

Through the intercession of John, Teresa,
Thomas, Thérèse, and Catherine, who found the center
through flame and castle, reason, love, and fire burning outward—
draw me inward, draw me deeper,
until it is no longer I who live,
but Christ who lives in me.

Amen.
